For the last decade there has been near zero innovation and improvement in the personal computer space. Sure RAM, CPU, and storage have gotten better. But what has been done to fix the problem of your mom buying a new computer, using it for a year, and it slowing down to turtle speeds due to malware... thus tricking her into buying yet another worthless computer. With the only real difference in technology is that the hard drive has a cleaner operating system image. While the numbers of size and speed may have improved marginally over the past 10 years, the performance and experience has remained the same for the last decade... Uneducated users unknowingly fall victim to spyware and trojans, assume their computer is old and worthless, toss it in a landfill, and buy a new... and the circle continues.

Microsoft fakes

The thing I love about working in the tech industry is the ability for non-technical people to fake their skills through 'pointing and clicking' til they figure it out. Perhaps this is Microsoft's reason for success in the business place today. Given that over half of the people in the IT industry lack the necessary education, training, certifications, and experience to adequately perform their assigned duties, it is no wonder that Microsoft is the preferred product of choice.

As a network engineering consultant, I often choose and recommend Microsoft products (SharePoint, Exchange, Forefront, Systems Center, etc) to my clients. And why not? I know that the reason they are hiring a consultant in the first place is because they don't truely know what they want to accomplish. And even if they did, they don't have the expertise to implement the solution. So, if I am to recommend a solution which an organization will ultimately have to sustain by themselves, why not pick one that is easiest for incompetent system administrators to support?
